OpenNet Instruments: Quick Guide
Product Summary
The OpenNet-1000: Data Acquisition Unit is an embedded Internet
Controller that has been designed to simplify transferring sensor
and process information directly across networks, whether it is your
internal LAN or the Internet.
The OpenNet-1000 is a general-purpose
programmable I/O device that is easy to use and cost effective.
Think of it as a simple, easy to use, XML data logger.
Instrument Installation
The OpenNet-1000 Development Kit comes complete with everything needed to install
and configure the OpenNet-1000, making it ready to acquire data across your computer
network or the Internet. We also provide a sample RTD, appropriate for
–40 ºC to +100 ºC operation.
To set-up and install the OpenNet-1000, you will need to follow these steps.
- Unpack the development kit and its accessories.
Gather the following information about your network:
- The name of your SMTP mail server.
- The IP Address assigned to the device.
Install the OpenNet Configuration Software on your PC. This PC needs to be on
the same subnet where the OpenNet device is installed.
Apply power to the OpenNet-1000 with the power supply provided. The OpenNet-1000
requires 24 Volts, 1.3 Amps. Either DC or AC voltage may be used.
Connect the OpenNet-1000 to your network with the crossover cable provided.
If you are connecting to a router/switch/hub, be sure the network device will auto-detect
that a crossover cable is being used. Otherwise a standard CAT-5 cable will need to be used.
Configure the OpenNet-1000 using the OpenNet Configuration Software.
A quick note about IP Addressing:
If a DHCP server is present, the OpenNet 1000 will accept an IP Address from the DHCP server
(dynamic IP addressing). If no DHCP server is present, the IP address will default to the static
address contained in the OpenNet-1000 (static IP addressing). The default IP address from the factory
is 192.168.0.200; the user may redefine this address to any valid address.
Application Development and Instrument Configuration
The OpenNet Configuration Software has a series of icons across the top of the screen.
These icons are used to configure an instrument. These icons are intended to be used in
order from left to right (although using this order is not required).
The following steps are needed to initially configure the OpenNet-1000. Refer to
Complete User's Guide for a detailed review of the OpenNet Configuration Software.
- Channel Definition. Define the inputs and outputs.
- Control Logic Definition. Define the logic that controls the outputs.
- Email Definition. Define the email alarms and who will receive them.
- Web Page Definition. Create a web page and insert the acquired data.
- LCD (Optional Display) Definition. Define what is to be displayed on the LCD.
- IP Address Configuration. Set the device IP address.
- Downloading the Configuration. Click on the download button.
Viewing and Importing Acquired XML Data
Once a device has been configured, sensor and process data can be viewed in a number of ways.
Viewing the web page served by the OpenNet-1000
First you will need to insure you are using a browser that supports XML and JAVA.
Versions 6.0 or later of Internet Explorer or Netscape meet this requirement.
To view the web page, simply enter the IP address in the address field of your browser. For example,
using the factory default IP address.
http://192.168.0.200, as the address will display the web page, and the acquired data,
in the layout defined by the user.
Viewing Acquired XML Data with a Web Browser
To view the raw acquired data, simply enter the IP address of the device followed by the name of the
file containing the last XML data set (getData.cgi), or the logged
XML data (getLoggedData.cgi) in the Address
field of your browser. For example using again the default IP address.
http://192.168.0.200/getData.cgi will display the last data set collected and
http://192.168.0.200/getLoggedData.cgi will display the entire logged data.
Importing a Acquired XML Data into a Spreadsheet
The simplest way to import XML data is to use a spreadsheet that understands XML. If you are using
Excel 2002 (XP), simply open the appropriate XML file at the IP address. Again using the default IP address.
Open the link http://192.168.0.200/getData.cgi to import the last
XML data set collected and
Open the link http://192.168.0.200/getLoggedData.cgi to import the entire
logged XML data.
If you are using Excel 2000, we have created a macro to import XML files from a web site.
Please feel free to open or download the following file:
OpenNetXMLtoExcel (xls).
